Swimsuit season, #HotGirlSummer or whatever you want to call it is well underway. And Miami Swim Week 2020 just served up some fresh inspo. As we’ve come to expect, the runways of the Sunshine State brimmed with swimsuits that, while flattering, won’t help you avoid wardrobe malfunctions should a big wave come your way.
Sure, they didn’t occupy much corporeal real estate, but that’s not to say the water-resistant lingerie swimsuits weren’t cute AF. So what will we all be suiting up in next summer (or next weekend, depending on how much of your swimwear budget still remains)? Well, first of all, breathe a sigh of relief: high-leg bottoms and one-shoulder tops are going nowhere. In fact, they were so ubiquitous, we’d label them more as a “given” than a “trend.” That said, some newish trends did emerge, mostly having to do with patterns and accents. For instance, according to the Miami collections, wild animal prints, ruffles both subtle and staggering and O-ring details are about to hit beach towels everywhere.
Click through the slideshow above for the top five seaside style cues we took from Miami Swim Week 2020 and, we can’t say this enough, always pair ’em with sunscreen.

Animal Prints
Want to really make a splash at the beach (or lake, or pool)? Channel your inner Jayne Mansfield in an animal-print swimsuit. They were all over the runways during Miami Swim Week and not just leopard spots, but zebra and tiger stripes, too.
If you're in the market for something less ubiquitous and/or obsessed with Western wear, try a cow-print bikini (like this one from It girl/photographer Renell Medrano and swimwear designer Melissa Simone) on for size.

Ruffles
As in ready-to-wear, so in swim. Larger-than-life ruffles are currently a major red carpet trend (thanks largely to Marc Jacobs) and at Miami Swim Week 2020, frills of all shapes and sizes accented shoulders, chests, hips, biceps, you name it.
No surprise here. Ruffles are cute, fun and accentuate what you’ve got. Plus, they’re retro, which these days is synonymous with cool. Balance out your princess-y swim look with shoulder-length geometric earrings.

Cut-Out One-Pieces
Next (this?) summer, highlight your abs and waist in a one-piece with strategic cut-out panels. What these suits lack in sturdiness, they make up for in punchiness and versatility. When the weather’s crap, wear yours as a bodysuit, top or layering piece. Everyone loves a twofer.

Yes, crisscross bikini tops and hovering, would-be belts continue to #trend. While we love their waist-defining effects, we loathe the awkward tan lines they leave in their wake. Pair your highly-strung bikini with some cat-eye sunglasses and you’ll be the hippest one at the pool — just remember to apply sunscreen liberally.

O-Ring Details
Dainty or chunky, metal or acetate, ring accents add personality to any suit. For a vintage, "Jane Birkin in La Piscine" vibe, slip into a neutral monochrome set. Or, per Miami Swim Week designers Diosa Mar, VDM the Label and Luli Fama, update your hardware look with funky mix-and-match separates and vivid (neon) colorways.
