Milan Fashion Week Spring 2021 is over so it’s time to reflect on the highs and lows. The street style was a definite high note, per usual. But the collections are another story. At least according to our forum members.
Fendi kicked things off with a show featuring models Eva Herzigova , Yasmin Le Bon and Penelope Tree sporting Silvia Venturini Fendi’s last solo offering before Kim Jones joins the team. Everyone was glued to their computer screens to witness Raf Simons’ co-creative director debut over at Prada. Giorgio Armani gave us yet another stunning collection. Donatella Versace basically rehashed Gianni Versace’s iconic Spring 1992 collection. Jeremy Scott relied on marionettes to showcase his latest Moschino collection. Even in the midst of a pandemic, Dolce & Gabbana created a staggering number of looks. Pierpaolo Piccioli had the honor of closing out the week. But his latest Valentino collection turned out to be unworthy of an actual runway show.
While lots of big brands disappointed, several more under-the-radar labels really delivered. Ready to see which collections made an impression on our forum members? Then click through the slideshow above to see the hits and many misses of Milan Fashion Week Spring 2021.
Hits and Misses MFW Spring 2021
HIT: Fendi
"This is dreamy." [TianCouture ]
"ABSOLUTELY SUBLIME! This is just so beautiful and I love how it feels current and relevant without pandering. The luxuriousness is OOZING through my screen. I love it!" [Salvatore ]
"What an evocative show! There are lots of looks to be desired!" [Ken Doll Jenner ]

MISS: Valentino
"What a joke. I find it incredibly offensive that designers stage a show during a pandemic to showcase this mediocre trash while burning money and risking people's health. Shame on you." [Vitamine W ]
"Looks like a cheap licensed show. Clothes you could find anywhere and styled in the most unimaginative way." [YohjiAddict ]
"So cheap. These clothes have zero identity. They could've been from anywhere." [Conbothsides ]

HIT: Giorgio Armani
"This is what I love about Armani: classic and effortlessly chic!" [dfl-001 ]
"When I was younger, I found Armani to be absolutely boring. But given that I'm growing older and find no need to be super edgy as well as the current state of fashion being so juvenile and tasteless, I am into the simplicity and refinement of Armani more and more. It's sexy in a way that is subtle." [Salvatore ]
"It‘s so rare these days to see a simply beautiful, wearable collection. I really appreciate that." [liberty33r1b ]

MISS: Versace
"E y e s o r e." [helmutnotdead ]
"Absolutely hideous. The new Gen X direction this brand has taken is so gross and cheap-looking. Just so unimaginative. Nautical prints? Let's make their hair look wet! Even though wet hair is so outdated as a styling trick." [dior_couture1245 ]
"This is tragic! I legit do not understand how this brand has lost its way. Versace has always been tacky and vile, but at least there was something appealing and elegant about it...womanly. But this is just a juvenile mess! Painful to look at this." [Salvatore ]

HIT: Moschino
"Absolutely genius." [helmutnotdead ]
"Clothes are actually pretty good and a lot of it very pretty. The inside out gimmick is handled in a very subtle and sophisticated way." [dior_couture1245 ]
"It's been a long time since I loved a fashion show! This was just genius. Fortunately, the collection itself was beautiful, too. Pure glamour and joy of fashion!" [RaisinBoy ]

MISS: Prada
"What a letdown. The show, casting and some of the looks too closely resemble Demna Gvasalia for me. The logos and printed hoodies are a huge NO. Already seeing fangirl editor responses online and not seeing the hype. I know we all love Miuccia and Raf, but this isn't it." [SophiaVB ]
"I am laughing so hard. The addition of Raf is supposed to make this better. Whatever, I'm just sipping tea and watching this ship sink slowly." [TaylorBinque ]
"From the man who destroyed Calvin Klein, here comes another disaster in the making!!! The moment I saw the yellow curtains I laughed! The clothes are exactly the mess I expected... The only Prada things here are the huge logos (for the women who aspire to be walking ads) and the famous prints from the Spring 1996 upholstery collection." [jeanclaude ]

HIT: Ports 1961
"This is one of the best collections from Milan so far! Beautiful clothes, beautiful styling." [Lola701 ]
"One of my Milan highlights also, think everything looks expensive, well-styled and felt cohesive as a collection overall. I'm already looking forward to this campaign!" [vogue28 ]

MISS: Dolce & Gabbana
"You'd think a pandemic would slow them down, but no. One hundred looks. Each one uglier than the next. Why?" [aracic ]
"I couldn't get past Look 20, the prints were too overwhelming and my eyes began to hurt!" [bluestar ]
"Their previous show gave me some hope that maybe they will eventually go in a different direction, but I see that nothing has changed. The way they mix colors and prints makes me vomit." [avonlea002 ]

HIT: N°21
"Absolutely stunning." [helmutnotdead ]
"Beautiful as usual. He knows how to capture that easy elegance Prada once did." [avonlea002 ]
"This is so easy, cool, unpretentious and wearable." [YohjiAdict ]

MISS: Salvatore Ferragamo
"Truly forgettable. I wouldn't mind the clothes if the shoes were good, but they are such a snoozefest! Come on, this is Ferragamo! Even Stuart Weitzman creates more desirable pieces." [RaisinBoy ]
"So bland and forgettable, like a dull show from the 2000s." [kasper! ]
"This brand used to be GORGEOUS. They used to produce some of the most beautiful Italian fashion ever. This is characterless." [GoldenPetals ]

HIT: Dsquared2
"I like it, a fusion of street, corporate and risqué." [Urban Stylin ]
"I like it. It feels very Tom Ford for Gucci/YSL. Nice to see a collection from them that is not overstyled. The 90s simplicity works for them and I hope their next show will be in the same direction. I would love to see the ideas shown here further developed." [avonlea002 ]

MISS: Max Mara
"It is what it is. Forgettable at best." [avonlea002 ]
"For Max Mara it's alright. I do wonder if they even care about being relevant with the press? Why insist on staging a show of just...this?" [YohjiAddict ]
"There are obviously some beautiful, very wearable pieces for the Max Mara customer, but it's just oh so uneventful. This collection certainly pales in comparison to the elegance and glamour of Fall 2017 — and even last season. A miss for me, unfortunately." [vogue28 ]

HIT: Giada
"Soft and tender...I like the vibe here." [kasper! ]
"Incredibly chic. The play on textures on both the clothes and the backdrop makes for a beautifully atmospheric presentation. Minimalist and pure." [Reggie63 ]
"Tranquil and disciplined. Volume and structure. Maybe a tad too serious with the presentation, but it’s the best collection so far from anywhere." [Phuel ]

MISS: Marni
"Francesco Risso 's work looks like an endless first year art school project..." [Lola701 ]
"I feel for the pattern cutters and everyone else involved who used to work with the old team and who now have to work on this crap every day." [tatouejeremie ]
"Imagine being the sales associate trying to sell this garbage to someone." [RedSmokeRise ]

MISS: Alberta Ferretti
"Isabel Marant-esque." [GivenchyAddict ]
"And she also did her own take on Givenchy not that long ago for whatever reason. Very unoriginal. This one is quite bad TBH, I hate the cut of those denim and suede jackets. It's Isabel Marant...but her line geared at outlets." [YohjiAddict ]
"Like so many collections from this brand of late, if you didn't know it was a Ferretti show, it could be anybody's." [bc collector ]

MISS: Boss
"Do they really need a 'designer' to launch another generic collection of clothes?" [jeanclaude ]
"The first section is just picking up Kim Jones' crumbs, but that garish mint color takes the cake." [YohjiAddict ]
"A collection like this doesn't need a runway presentation. They probably do it to elevate the brand's status. There was a time when Boss wanted to be a luxury house, but it was a fail. It lacks the high fashion aspect." [avonlea002 ]

MISS: Etro
"I think they should turn the lights of their atelier on when choosing the prints for the next collection..." [jeanclaude ]
"As the only person on this forum who cares about this brand, I found this was a very middle-of-the-road Etro collection. Too much beachwear made it look like a resort collection." [Ruito ]
"I think Etro puts out stronger collections during the fall. Their spring shows always lack a certain maturity and elegance. They go way to overboard with the prints and colors until it ends up looking like beachwear." [LustforFashion ]

MISS: Blumarine
"The Olsen twins would have fought each other to wear the pink fur collared coats, the sorbet colored minis or the rose-printed boleros for one of their awful movies. It's like a 2000s aesthetic Instagram account vomited on a runway." [YohjiAddict ]
"Blumarine is no stranger to this type of fashion so it’s quite surprising that it didn’t work. The fabrics and techniques look painfully cheap. If these pieces were made with luxurious fabrics and construction, then I could look past this garish mess." [GivenchyHomme ]
"I love all this tackiness and early 2000s realness. However, it's not memorable at all." [aracic ]

MISS: Philipp Plein
"The new Eurotrash." [kasper! ]
"Tom Ford and Bottega Veneta should sue him. Who buys his sh*t?" [avonlea002 ]
