New York Fashion Week Fall 2022 is officially over. Heavyweight designers Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs opted out. But the week remained a buzzworthy affair.
Proenza Schouler kicked off proceedings celebrating 20 years in the business with a collection of strong tailoring and covetable carryalls. Ballooning bows and tiered ruffles were a thing at Jason Wu Collection, while at Victor Glemaud an all-black cast was decked out in formfitting creations in a mostly monochromatic palette. Ulla Johnson did what she does best. And Altuzarra took us on a journey through fisherman knits and mermaid dresses.
Meanwhile, Eckhaus Latta marked a decade of delivering genderless and avant-garde fashion. Christian Siriano blended Victorian -era elements with modernity and flaunted the looks on models of all different body types. The hottest ticket in town was LaQuan Smith with Julia Fox opening the show in a sexy cut-out gown almost breaking the internet in the process. Christian Cowan put on an energetic show overlooking New York City’s majestic skyline. Wes Gordon opened his Carolina Herrera show with a white blouse just like the ones routinely favored by the brand’s creator. Plenty of superstars represented Michael Kors Collection (which featured an equally A-list front row) giving us big city glamour.

Hits and Misses NYFW Fall 2022
HIT: Jason Wu Collection
"I loved this collection, it felt very breezy and light (much better than last season), the colors are amazing!" [Ruito ]
"Always look forward to Jason Wu during NYFW and more often than not, I like what I see. Wu never abandons his signature aesthetic and that's something I can appreciate. Despite the bold prints and colors here, the brown flowing dress stands out to me the most and is divine!" [vogue28 ]
"It's a wonderful collection." [upNorth ]

MISS: Proenza Schouler
"They first started with Nicolas Ghesquière's Balenciaga, Phoebe Philo's Celine and now to celebrate their 20 year anniversary, they decided to go for Loewe lite." [THD96 ]
"Twenty years in the business and Parasite Schouler still hasn't developed its own voice. How is it even possible to survive this long with nothing to say? This collection looks like a bunch of sad Loewe leftovers..." [perhydrol ]
"Twenty years in the business? Daaaaang. And not an identity to speak of. Incredible." [dior_couture1245 ]

HIT: Carolina Herrera
"I love a lot of this and it gives me so much peace to see such refinement in a collection!" [WAVES ]
"I thought this was a beautiful collection, quite partial to Carolina Herrera lately and this is undoubtedly one of the more sophisticated shows to come out of NYFW. I will always be a fan of those volumes and silhouettes and the color palette here is divine. That floor-length yellow dress is heavenly!" [vogue28 ]

MISS: Anna Sui
"She somehow managed to make it look even more cheap and dusty than usual." [avonlea002 ]
"Forever stuck in the 60s...even a 92-year-old Mary Quant would find this boring..." [jeanclaude ]

HIT: Michael Kors Collection
"High fashion that is wearable. I like this. Sensible." [Bugsy ]
"Quintessential Michael Kors and I have zero complaints. The color palette is gorgeous, love all those caramel tones which Kors does so well and the splash of vivid yellow and pink throughout." [vogue28 ]
"Back to basics, back to what makes Michael Kors great in the first place!" [Ruito ]

MISS: Christian Siriano
"I tend to give Christian Siriano a free pass because his show is often the most exciting and fashion-filled event on the NYFW calendar, but the majority of these looks here are simply inexcusable. Not to mention the hem on Candice Huffine's dress is coming down!" [vogue28 ]
"Can't believe anyone buys his clothes as even the good ideas have the worst execution possible." [perhydrol ]
"It's like he never left Project Runway ." [THD96 ]

HIT: Tory Burch
"The location was amazing!" [gossiping ]
"I loved the location, too, will never grow tired of a glowing New York skyline and I thought the collection was rather strong. Loved the 80s asymmetric shapes and the colorblocking looks toward the end of the show (especially the combination of purple and red)." [vogue28 ]

MISS: Gabriela Hearst
"There's nothing sustainable about clothes that belong in the trash." [dior_couture1245 ]
"It's basic to the point of being completely uninspired, unnecessary and without any kind of aspiration. It's the ultimate proof that flexing on sustainability and fancy fabrics are not enough to create an interesting collection." [perhydrol ]
"So dated." [liberty33r1b ]

HIT: Altuzarra
"Definitely a highlight of NYFW." [avonlea002 ]
"I thought it was his best show in years. Loved it. Each time a new look came out I was just like 'wow, that's beautiful'!" [gossiping ]
"It's such a strange mix of everything in one collection, but I somehow like it. Some of the looks are actually classic Altuzarra, some are quite Paco Rabanne-ish... However, it leaves a nice impression." [perhydrol ]

MISS: Eckhaus Latta
"Rather unimpressive…" [Lola701 ]
"'Fabric dumpster' comes to my mind..." [jeanclaude ]
"Always a cautionary tale that the 'new wave' of design kids become so boring and tired after, well, 10 years in this case. Happy Anniversary!" [90sFan ]

HIT: Ulla Johnson
"I absolutely adore this collection. It's so effortless and full of charm yet it doesn't look too obvious, there's a lot of attitude actually. It's truly a highlight of this NYFW." [perhydrol ]
"Beautiful collection. This is a highlight for NYFW and reminds me of what it used to be." [reese06 ]
"Another hit of a Ulla Johnson collection! She's become a total asset to the NYFW calendar and I just love Johnson's use of color and prints. The styling never overpowers the garments and Johnson nails boho chic." [vogue28 ]

MISS: Helmut Lang
"Pathetic." [Phuel ]
"Instead of regurgitating the label archives (once more), they should focus on building new vocabulary to add to that archive. Creating a new look based on Lang's style does not mean changing little details of his iconic pieces." [jeanclaude ]
"Just have some respect and close the brand." [helmutnotdead ]

HIT: Brandon Maxwell
"Great casting. Beautiful casting." [Cocteau Stone ]
"A little bias toward Brandon Maxwell and therefore I like this! One of the better collections coming out of NYFW and there are some gorgeous separates here, like the ivory jacket with the belt detailing." [vogue28 ]

MISS: LaQuan Smith
"Stunt casting of Julia Fox to hide the fact that he has nothing to say with his clothes. His clothes always look like a Fashion Nova version of Tom Ford's Gucci." [THD96 ]
"Clothes are forgettable trash. Unsexy and unflattering. Next." [Machinegumm ]
"He and most of his peers are far more interested in being designers than they are in designing." [dior_couture1245 ]

HIT: Bevza
"Great collection. Svetlana Bevza really pushed herself to explore a variety of outcomes. Tactile, pure, serene — these are just a few words that come to mind. She doesn’t have the reputation yet as a 'serious' designer, though this should be changing soon. I always look forward to her collections." [Fulton St Critique ]
"A really beautiful monastic simplicity, like a palate cleansing sorbet course. Not everything works — and some things are a little expected — but I kind of like that because there is a confidence in her experimentation." [Cocteau Stone ]

MISS: Dion Lee
"Another disappointment from him. He tries to be Rick Owens...but instead he ends up looking more like an Alexander Wang trying too hard to be avant-garde." [jeanclaude ]
"It feels 'darker' and more weird. Hopefully he dials down on the obvious 'inspiration' in the future." [Machinegumm ]
"His work has been getting way too weird and disturbing for my taste. I think he should just edit his ideas and work in a more commercial way because all the gimmicks presented here don't really work." [perhydrol ]
See all the looks from the Dion Lee collection .
MISS: Christian Cowan
"Unfortunately, this looks like the Shein version of a Tom Ford collection..." [Urban Stylin ]
"What a mess. Sequins, velvet, feathers and those colors have never looked that sad." [Lola701 ]
"Birds died for this sad collection and so many of the garments don't even fit right. They're not even that complicated pattern making wise. Chucking strings of rhinestones on the seams does not hide this..." [Cocteau Stone ]
See all the looks from the Christian Cowan collection .
MISS: Hervé Léger by Max Azria
"Who cares? What is this? Who needs this? Can we stop with nondescript whatever brand resurgences?" [dontbeadrag ]
"To think what this brand used to produce during the 80s in stark comparison to this...nothingness." [vogue28 ]

MISS: Peter Do
"Peter Do? More like Peter Don't!" [Ruito ]
"The use of gel lights/diffusers doesn't add anything and they make it way too hard to discern the fabrics so it all looks so lifeless." [Cocteau Stone ]
"It feels soulless and sterile. These clothes are missing ease and seem very serious." [reese06 ]

MISS: Bronx and Banco
"This collection should be sold with a STD test." [avonlea002 ]
"It’s vulgar in terms of aesthetic but beyond sophisticated in terms of clothes-making and fabrics... I wonder why U.S. designers seems to always go full on trash: trashy clothes in trashy fabrics." [Lola701 ]
"Anyone that wears clothes this desperate is clearly crying out for help through fashion…" [YohjiAddict ]
