2011 SAG Awards: Red Carpet Fashion Review

The winners may not have been all that surprising, and the gowns may not have been as fashion forward as one might have expected after the Golden Globes, but there were plenty of beautiful gowns to marvel at in this year’s lineup of “safe” SAG Award fashion choices.

Natalie Portman chose a similar silhouette to her pale pink Victor and Rolf dress at the Golden Globes, with a white strapless Azarro gown; this choice was a bit more sleek and flattering, with its simple crystal embellishments. The night’s Best Actress winner complemented her look with $2 million Tiffany & Co. earrings. Portman’s Black Swan co-star, Mila Kunis, was one of the best dressed celebrities of the night, as well as one of the only risk takers. Recalling the red gown First Lady Michelle Obama recently wore to the State Dinner, the young star opted for a dazzling strapless Sarah Burton-designed Alexander McQueen gown.

Kunis and Portman have something in common other than their latest film. Their dresses played into some of the night’s major fashion trends: strapless gowns, red hues, and neutral-toned dresses. Tina Fey looked the best she ever has on a red carpet, in a Pre-Fall 2011 Oscar de la Renta guipure lace gown, and award winner Julianna Margulies wore a strapless, draped-at-the-bust Yves Saint Laurent gown.

Rosario Dawson shined in a simple but sexy J. Mendel lemon slit dress; Angie Harmon looked princess-like in a Monique Lhuillier gown.

Hilary Swank went with an understated Versace one-shoulder, floor-sweeping dress, and Winona Ryder wore a white Alberta Ferretti number.

Amy Adams wore Herve Leroux, and rising style star Lea Michele stuck with one of her favorite designers, Oscar de la Renta, opting to show off her figure in a gorgeous blush crepe de chine caviar bead embroidered gown from the designer’s Spring 2011 collection.

As for the more esoteric looks, Claire Danes opted for a strapless, belted Louis Vuitton dress, and January Jones wore a Carolina Herrera topaz chantecaille lace gown, which was a much better fit than her outrageous Versace dress at the Golden Globes.

Helena Bonham Carter looked expectedly kooky and sloppy in a Marc Jacobs black and white outfit, and Nicole Kidman’s sheer lace-panel Nina Ricci seemed uncharacteristically dowdy and dated.
