With the mass of British talent in critically acclaimed films this year, the BAFTA Awards proved to be a star-studded ceremony but the red carpet left a little to be desired. Held at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in London, the ceremony’s winners and losers were hardly a surprise with The King’s Speech picking up most of them but there were some fashion hits and some definite misses.
Keeping with her minimalist choices of late, rising starlet Emma Stone looked timeless in a sweeping dress by Lanvin, but the winning fashion darling of the night was Hailee Steinfeld who wowed us again with her jeweled Miu Miu.
Nominee Amy Adams wore a somewhat ill fitting gown by Elie Saab that, while beautiful in design, didn’t suit her body shape or coloring, and Jessica Alba wore a sweaping Atelier Versace gown that seemed out of place among the subdued tones and less formal choices of her peers.
Tom Ford, whose A Single Man was a great hit at the BAFTAs last year, was well represented with both Julianne Moore and Eva Green wearing his much buzzed about womenswear collection, but unfortunately, neither look worked perfectly. While the color of Moore’s velvet strapless gown shone against her alabaster skin, the flow and cut of the dress did her figure no justice as she moved and Green’s over-ruched sheer top, while on trend, looked over-worked.
Rosamund Pike’s timely choice of a printed Alexander McQueen dress was overshadowed by her on-stage blunder where she nearly announced the winner before the nominees. While Emma Watson‘s one shouldered Valentino dress was striking, her heavy-handed beauty look stole some of the attention.
