Forget boring or aesthetically unappealing, many of the A-listers who turned out for this year’s Grammy Awards looked plain weird. Topping the list were Lady Gaga, of course, who showed up in an embryo-like giant egg carried by four men, to tie into the theme of her latest album, Born this Way. Next up was Rihanna who walked the red carpet in a sheer, tiered white lingerie-meets-Santa Claus Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2011 couture gown. Justin Bieber looked hotel doorman-like in a white suit, and Florence Welch turned up in a Swan embroidered Givenchy couture gown (thankfully she didn’t opt to wear the hat that Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci showed alongside the gown when he presented it a few weeks ago in Paris).
Unfortunately, it didn’t stop there. Katy Perry wore no less than three over-the-top custom Armani outfits, while Nicki Minaj gave Florence Welch a run for her money in her own animal-inspired Givenchy outfit, which she complemented with outlandish Munster-like hair. Seriously, why didn’t someone call Tim Gunn?
You know the fashion at an award show has veered on the seriously kooky side when one of the most notable trends is poultry – yes, as in chicken. Aside from Lady Gaga being carried around in her egg, Cee-Lo performed outfitted in a colorful psychedelic tribal chicken-like outfit and Gwyneth Paltrow wore long, neon feathered earrings.
Thankfully, not all was lost, and some stars did manage to look memorably beautiful. Feather earrings aside, Gwyneth Paltrow looked great in her all-black ensemble which she spiced up with some colorful shoes, and Jennifer Hudson looked gorgeous walking the red carpet in a Versace Pre-Fall 2010 navy blue dress.
