Julianne Moore is always a standout on the red carpet, especially with her unmistakable fiery-red mane. This awards season, Julianne has been getting a lot of praise for her role in The Kids Are All Right, alongside Annette Bening. She’s also getting exposure as the new model for Talbots, however, the bulk of her time has been spent promoting her Oscar-nominated film.
The accomplished actress definitely has some favorite designers: Lanvin, Tom Ford, and Yves Saint Laurent. Although the pink one-sleeve Alber Elbaz for Lanvin gown she selected for the Golden Globes 2011 got mixed reviews because of its asymmetrical nature and wrinkled appearance, the A-list actress is always getting her picture taken.
Over the years, her style choices have become edgier; at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, Julianne wore a yellow Christian Lacroix Haute Couture gown with black feathered shoulders, set off by Chopard jewelry for the premiere of her film Blindness.
But sometimes fashion risks just don’t payoff. Take the emerald green Resort 2010 Yves Saint Laurent number she wore to the September 2009 Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Chloe. The puffy sleeves of the bolero overwhelmed her frame, and the heart-shaped cut was distracting if not downright unflattering.
But her off-the-mark fashion moments are usually few and far between. The leading lady’s dramatic purple Balenciaga outfit she wore to the Paris showing of designer-turned-director Tom Ford‘s film, A Single Man, in February of last year was a knockout. A Tom Ford selection might have been the obvious choice, but the dedicated fan of the designer can’t wear his clothes for every event. Besides, Julianne proved her love when she worked the runway at the December show for the Tom Ford Spring 2011 collection.
Julianne also modeled for Italian fashion house Bulgari, but her mostly-nude ads surrounded by lion cubs and the brand’s accessories caused quite a stir, and were even banned in some places.
Julianne wore Lanvin’s ruffled, reddish-orange number for the 15th Annual Critics Choice Awards at the beginning of 2010, and her custom Spring 2010 Erdem gown at the New York premiere of The Kids Are All Right in late June of last year was actually modified from the runway.
Often admired for her red carpet choices, Julianne’s casual attire is also on-point. A relaxed patterned tee, long scarf, rolled jeans and a classic Hermes Birkin bag were perfect for cruising around the West Village. The actress redefined travel wear at LAX this past November, looking sleek in a tailored leather jacket, slouchy grey top, chunky short black boots, and aviator sunglasses. There’s no denying that over the years, the now 50-year-old star has more than proven her stylish longevity.
