Hollywood icon and sex symbol from the 1940s and 1950s, Jane Russell, died yesterday at the age of 89. Starting her career as a model, Russell was discovered by eccentric aviator-turned-film director Howard Hughes and made her film debut in Hughes’ western The Outlaw to mild acclaim, but her curvaceous figure and pin-up looks made waves.
Many roles followed, but perhaps her shining moment in the cinema was starring opposite Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 classic Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. As the strong willed best friend to Monroe’s ditzy Lorelei Lee, Russell made a name for herself with her enviable curves and big personality. Her film career continued with noteworthy films such as The Paleface with Bob Hope and The Revolt of Mamie Stover, but she left the industry in the 60s, facing pressure because of her age. She later worked on Broadway and founded the World Adoption International Agency after finding the international adoption process arduous.
Her famous curves and signature style made her an icon of the time and Russell’s powerful stance and no-holds-barred attitude in her roles carved her a place in pin-up history. Her contribution to the film industry won’t soon be forgotten.
