Malin Akerman: Making Her Mark on the Red Carpet

When Malin Akerman hit the red carpet recently at the Tribeca Film Festival, it wasn’t her dress that had everyone talking, but her new darker hairdo. The normally blonde actress was there to promote her film The Bang Bang Club. Malin actually has several projects in the works, and will probably soon reach a wider audience thanks to starring alongside big names like Jennifer Aniston and Ryan Phillippe. The Swedish-born celeb generally adheres to trends, but has been known to take some liberties playing with textures and clashing prints.

She picked up on the neutral trend courtesy of the peach-colored leather asymmetrical J. Mendel with draped skirt she wore to the festival. Accessories included Christian Louboutin Louv sandals, a gold clutch and Cartier jewels. Malin has been producing stellar red carpet looks for a few years now, though. Project Runway’s Rami Kashou was behind the Fall 2008 floor-length patterned gold metallic ruffled number the star donned for the March 2009 Los Angeles Watchmen premiere.

It really was all about the shoes when Malin attended the June 2009 Los Angeles screening of The Proposal. Those killer embellished Prada heels were knockouts and stole the show from her slinky blue silk Prada dress and Martin Katz jewels. This lace-on-lace Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2010 combination is almost too much of a good thing. For the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Party back in March 2010, Malin’s pairing of a black lace tank and white lace skirt had undertones of 80s Madonna. The black clutch and peep-toe pumps helped make it more current.

Orange crystals were added to Malin’s puff-sleeve Miu Miu Spring 2010 frock for the Happythankyoumoreplease premiere at the April 2010 Gen Art Film Festival in New York City. The runway version also included a collar, but the actress had all the accent necessary, especially with the additions of an orange clutch and Miu Miu heels. The star went casual for a very public lunch at the infamous Ivy restaurant in May of last year. Malin sported a black tunic, faded skinny jeans, open-toed booties and a clear mini tote to match her Lucite shades.

When her film The Bang Bang Club premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2010, Malin opted for a shimmery red J. Mendel Fall 2010 gown. Seemingly a walking contradiction, Malin expertly combined a horizontally striped red sweater and plaid scarf while out in Beverly Hills back in January. The saddle bag with red side accents, short tan buckle boots, and even the black hat served as on-point accompaniment.
