Celebrities’ obsession with all things sheer has been raging since summer, but lately stars have taken the trend a step further from demure lacey cutouts and overlays to full-on, bra-baring sheer tops. With the crop top trend also in full swing, it seems as if fashionistas are combining the two for maximum exposure.

Model Julia Restoin Roitfeld, daughter of former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld, has fully embraced the underwear-as-outerwear look. Earlier this summer at the Burberry Serpentine summer party, she wore a bra-baring Tom Ford sheer black top with gathered layers that somewhat disguised her visible bra. Then at the launch of Beyonce’s album 4 in London she re-did the look in lace tee, flouncy skirt, and t-strap sandals. They say the third time’s the charm, and at Paris Fashion Week Restoin Roitfeld went even more va-va-voom for the Givenchy after party at L’ARC nightclub, wearing a cleavage-exposing sheer top over a leather bra.

What’s the perfect bowling outfit? Well, if you’re Kim Kardashian it’s skin-tight leather leggings, stacked heels, and a sheer top that shows off a lacy bra—that’s what she wore on a night out at Bowlmore Lanes. If you’re going to go sheer on top, it’s wise to balance the look with a maxi skirt or voluminous pants on bottom, like English actress Louisa Lytton did at the Demons Never Die UK premiere. She paired a silk watercolor maxi skirt with a see-through black lace top and an oversized clutch. Model Poppy Delevigne worked the same trick at the Nina Ricci show at Paris Fashion Week, balancing a black lace tee that exposed a silvery bra with slouchy drawstring pants in the favorite fall color plum.

There are some settings where a peekaboo top might not be appropriate, such as the Big Gig event for GirlGuiding UK (the British version of Girl Scouts). British singer Dionne Bromfield eschewed the family-friendly vibe and was likely to shock some of her younger fans in the hot pink lace crop top she wore with black daisy dukes and military boots. The daring look seems more appropriate for the Raspoutine nightclub, where Keri Hilson was spotted baring it all in a leather mini dress with a shredded deep V. The exposed bra look originated on the runways, and celebs have been making it highbrow as well. As stylista Anna Dello Russo peeked out from behind a veil at Lanvin, her bra peeked out from under her sheer white blouse and high waist corset-inspired shorts by Louis Vuitton.
What do you think, is the bra-baring trend one that you would try, or should it be labeled indecent exposure?
