Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ‘em how it’s done. Here’s a look at this week’s celeb hits and misses, from a competition between Parker Posey and Chloe Sevigny for the worst red dress of the holiday season to Zoe Saldana in some sweet sleeves.
Trend #1: Festive Red Dress

It’s a tie! Not only did Chloe Sevigny and Parker Posey both step out in strange and shiny red packages this week, they were caught red-handed at the same event! At a screening of W.E. at the Museum of Modern Art, Parker Posey went for a red hot look but ended up with a meltdown. Things start getting zany with the funny lady’s ill-placed neck ruffle and her addition of red tights (in a different shade), but the webbed toes on her red pumps really make this look eccentric. Just down the red carpet, Chloe Sevigny’s look was just as confusing. Mullet skirts are trending with celebs, but her super-short skirt trailed off in an odd, tangled way and the chunky boots and pleated leather coat (which can’t help but remind me of something from The Matrix) belong more with a rainy weather outfit than as formal outerwear. Weirdest of all, though, is the bunching in the middle—maybe the rest of her skirt is stuck up there.
Trend #2: Leather and Lace

Miss: Helen Mirren is usually an inspiration—but this outfit just inspired me to look away and wait until it’s over. Probably no one has aged as gorgeously as Mirren, but she’s pushing it with this Dolce & Gabbana skin-tight lace cutout dress that even Madonna wouldn’t touch these days. The star prints are fun and on-trend but the leather gloves make the look even more awkward with an S&M touch. Mirren did wear this dress to the British Comedy Awards, so maybe the whole thing is a joke.
Hit: Lady Gaga put Mirren’s look into perspective when she wore a startlingly similar look at the Lady Gaga x Terry Richardson book launch at the New Museum in NYC. Unsurprisingly, the gloves aren’t so shocking on the singer, and her sheer lace gown—also by D&G—was basically an excuse to wear black lingerie out, but the look actually sort of makes sense on Gaga, especially with all of the peek-a-boo dressing celebs are doing lately.
Trend #3: Puff Sleeves

Miss: Julianne Moore‘s style is usually understated and glamorous, but she went for a big exclamation in this Lanvin puff sleeved dress that she wore to the Waterford Crystal premiere in NYC. The high neck and exaggerated shoulders create an austere silhouette that just doesn’t work for the fair beauty.
Hit: Zoe Saldana nailed the puffed sleeves look in Giambattista Valli at the 21st Annual Children’s Defense Fund “Beat the Odds” event. The short length of the sleeves adds volume without overwhelming and her white pumps finished the polished and ladylike look.
