Trend #1: Sheer

Miss: It’s clear that the sheer trend isn’t going away any time soon, and most of the time I don’t want it to—until it’s the see-through Balenciaga jumpsuit that Jessica White wore to a Jay-Z concert to benefit the United Way of NYC. A jumpsuit with a turtleneck and a healthy set of ruffles might’ve won her a spot on this list by itself, but the model sealed the deal by leaving very little to the imagination. Going bra-less is one thing, but going bra-less while you’re also basically pantless and shirtless gets you on the miss list. I tried to find pics of this look from the runway to see what White might’ve gotten wrong, but it looks like even the designer doesn’t want to take credit for this one because they’re nowhere to be found.
Hit: I very well might regret putting this look on the hit list, but after White’s jumpsuit, Fergie’s look at the Grammys seems tame, and almost likeable. The singer wore a coral lace dress by Jean Paul Gaultier, leaving at least a full set of underwear on display. The look might be a bit over-the-top, but I love the color and pattern of the lace, the contrast of the demure high collar with the full disclosure of what’s underneath, and the classic silhouette created by Fergie’s high-waisted lingerie.
Trend #2: Fur Padding

Miss: I love the pleated Versus Spring 2012 tennis dress that Katy Perry wore to the DirecTV Celebrity Beach Bowl Afterparty, but the fur ruins it for me. When you’ve already got blue hair, you should do your best to avoid Muppet comparisons, but the popstar went for it with this furry purple shrug. Fur vests have been big with celebs this winter, but the shagginess of this one reminds me of a caveman… at a rave.
Hit: Surprisingly, Leighton Meester was able to pull off the Louis Vuitton dress with fur paneling that she wore to the amfAR New York Gala. The fur pads on the skirt could’ve easily ended up looking like the selectively-shaved pompoms on a poodle, but with Meester’s elegance, they create a cool take on the peplum and fur trends, and she actually looks better in the dress than the model.
Trend #3: Fascinators

Miss: It’s a tie! Last year’s royal wedding kicked off the fascinator trend, but the over-the-top hats are probably best left to British aristocratic events. Jessica White took a few risks this week, and the gold fortune-teller turban she wore to the amfAR Gala was one of them. Katy Perry went even more explosive with her oversized rose hat at the MusiCares Person of the Year Gala celebrating Paul McCartney. Both of their headgear caused a double take, but neither need to be seen again.
