Style Showdown: Mischa Barton’s Sheer and Leather Letdown and More

Trend #1: Ruffled Hem

Miss: I used to think Whitney Port could do no wrong, until I saw what she wore to The Rodial Beautiful Awards in London. The stylista’s dress looked like a too-big golden toga slipping off to reveal a lacy bra, and the ruffled hem reminded me of a tacky lampshade. Apparently, her co-host for the event, Julien Macdonald, sent her a selection of dresses to choose from, so at least Whitney’s not entirely to blame.

Hit: Michelle Williams went with just the right amount of ruffle at a pre-Oscars event. She has the perfect haircut to complement the mod look of her black and white Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci cocktail dress.

Trend #2: Sheer and Leather

Miss: When you’re still trying to win back the hearts and minds of fans who begrudge you for ruining The O.C., it’s probably best to play it safe style-wise. Mischa Barton did the opposite in the ensemble she wore to Il Sole restaurant in Hollywood—leather pants, a bra-baring top, loud polka dots, and winged eyeliner are just too much together. Barton may be making a comeback, but not in this look.

Hit: Michelle Williams swoops in with another win in Round 2. Her leather and lace combination was killer at a dinner for Mulberry during London Fashion Week. Williams’ dress by the designer, featuring a bustier top and sheer leather sleeves, was custom-made!

Trend #3: Column Dress

Miss: Talk about Damsels in DistressAnaleigh Tipton was one at the film premiere, wearing a white column dress from Calvin Klein Collection that probably could have been helped no matter how it was styled. The skirt’s length falls short and the shape (or lack thereof) doesn’t flatter the actress’ figure at all. The sexy halter neck is spoiled by those black spaghetti straps, which are actually attached to her dress and not just an errant bra.

Hit: At the Human Rights Campaign gala, Charlize Theron was the yin to Tipton’s yang in a black Acne column dress. Her shift’s subtle top layer created a more feminine silhouette, and the floor-skimming length kept the lines long and lean. Her pretty side point and minimal accessories finished the elegant look.
