Summer Wardrobe Remix: Inspiring New Ways to Wear Your Same Old Stuff

Unexpected Layers
We'll start with the easiest tactic first. If the sundresses you were super excited about in May now have you heaving a heavy sigh as you contemplate wearing them yet again, get creative. The fitted button downs you wear under sweaters in the winter can do double duty in the summer. Especially those trendy ones from last year with embellished collars. No surprise that Alexa Chung shows us how to make this one work. Roll up the sleeves and layer it underneath your dress. Or, take your summer staple horizontal stripe tee and tie it at the waist over a loose maxi like this blogger (number 4).

Tights and Shorts
Cool, funky tights were big again last year and you know you've still got some in your drawer. Some nights are getting cool enough to throw them on under a pair of shorts. It's a fresher look than a dress or skirt, since that's a more typical fall/winter styling option. These swallow print tights from ASOS are on sale for $9.33. Wear them with short dark denim cutoffs (please, no exposed pockets!), flats and a more covered up, loose top.

Light Knits
Open-stitch knits are a big trend for fall, and you can totally wear them now. Throw a sweater with an open weave, like the Staring At Stars Open-Stitch Sweater shown ($49), over a simple spaghetti strap dress or tank top and skirt. Urban Outfitters actually has a lot of their early fall knits styled with summer outfits if you're looking for some inspiration. If you've been rocking crop tops this summer, try this cardi combo, you know you've got a sweater like that in your closet.

Ignore Your Pedicure
I know, when you've got your toesies painted in the summer you want to show them off in sandals. But you know what else is fun to show off? Your new fall pumps! Ignore the traditional aesthetic that says you have to wear open-toed shoes in the summer. This work look from Net-a-Porter is perfect with a pair of seasonless Jimmy Choo pumps, $695. Or wear a pair of statement pumps in the evening for a look you'll be excited about. This is also a great idea if you ignored your pedi too long!
