New Year's Fashion Resolutions
-
I will experiment with trends—without being a victim
There's a difference between being fashion-forward and being a fashion victim—I will remain firmly in the former camp.
Kenzo Tiger-Intarsia Knitted Sweater, $715 at Net-a-Porter.
-
I will get out of my sartorial comfort zone
I tend to feel coolest when I'm wearing something that isn't completely shape-flattering or sensical, and well, that's great. I'm going to pursue that more, because feeling good is more important than the idea of looking "good."
Christopher Kane Flower and Crepe Mini Dress, $2,190 at Opening Ceremony.
-
I will not be blinded by labels
Yes, this tee is amazing and yes I want it but am I really willing to throw down $115 just because it's a piece by a label that I admire?
Rodarte Barbed Wire Radarte T-Shirt, $115 at Opening Ceremony.
-
I will shop ethically
While there are some universal best-practices in the fashion industry (i.e. sweatshop-free goods), there are also plenty of pet interests—whether that be focusing on all-natural material or chasing after vegan wares. This year, we're going to pay a lot more attention to how something is made and take care to make sure we feel good about every purchase.
Stella McCartney Beckett Faux Leather Shoulder Bag, $1,230 at Net-a-Porter.
-
I will champion smaller designers
The fashion establishment isn't exactly stodgy, but it's always fun and important to keep up with the young guns.
Gerlan Jeans Doric T-Shirt, $186 at Opening Ceremony.
-
I will become more knowledgeable about fashion history
What better way to try and understand the viewpoints of current designers than to look toward the past?
100 Years of Fashion by Cally Blackman, $27.83 at Barnes and Noble.
-
I will not spend too much
Smart shopping is the name of the game: trolling eBay/Etsy for vintage designer finds, becoming hawk-eyed with sales and getting familiar with the ins and outs of coupon codes.
Vintage Coach Black Full-Flap Crossbody Purse, $30 at Etsy.
-
I will keep investment purchases in mind
Having a full wardrobe full of investment pieces is the ideal, yes. We love fun new pieces, but we really honor the classics (and the soon-to-be classics.)
Givenchy Medium Pandora Box Bag, $2,185 at Net-a-Porter.
