The Rise of the 90s
The 90s made a comeback in 2013 with a grunge punk movement that signaled the return of fashion anarchy. In May, the movement was cemented when the hallowed halls of The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted a punk-themed exhibit, Punk: Chaos to Couture, for this year’s Costume Institute gala.

Conde Nast Closes Internship Program
Media conglomerate Conde Nast shutters its internship program after the publisher is sued this past summer by two former interns who claimed they were paid below minimum wage during internships at W and The New Yorker. The internship program will be officially discontinued come 2014, though current interns will remain unaffected and will be able to remain employed until the end of their agreed upon terms.

Third time's a charm, as Jil Sander leaves her namesake label for a third time after recently rejoining the house in 2012 and replacing Raf Simons. Though this time Sander states her departure is for personal reasons, this is one exit we didn’t see coming. Her last collection was the spring 2014 showing in Milan.

Oscar de la Renta Brings John Galliano Back
Extending a three-week residency, Oscar de la Renta opens up his studio to bring disgraced designer John Galliano back to the fashion scene for fall, as the collaboration coincides with de la Renta’s Fall 2013 collection. While classic Galliano influences are present on the runway, the former Dior designer remains behind the scenes and does not make an appearance at the New York presentation.

Lululemon Pant Recall
In April, Lululemon Athletica Inc. recalled its black Luon yoga pants deemed too sheer to wear. Turns out the ongoing fabric problems along with pilling is the consumer's fault as founder and chairman Chip Wilson charmingly states in a TV interview that “some women’s bodies just actually don’t work” for the pants because of thigh-rubbing. The company announced his resignation from the post this December.

Drumroll please. With all the designer relocations of the past year, it’s hard to keep up, but one collection kept us waiting with bated breath and proved worthwhile with its peplums and marble prints that didn’t disappoint. Alexander Wang’s first collection for Balenciaga paid homage to the house, uncovering its codes and translating it into a full fledged functioning wardrobe.

The Rick Owens Step Team
Back in March, Rick Owens surprised Paris Fashion Week showgoers with a troop of professional step dancers down the runway instead of the usual starved models. Two separate groups stomped out, the first dressed in black and the second in tan with matching do-rags and high tops to boot. The refreshing move left attendees in a state of shock, while viewers around the globe couldn’t help but re-watch again and again.

In April of 2013, an eight-story commercial building in Bangladesh, which manufactured apparel for brands like Joe Fresh (among others), collapsed and caused plenty of backlash for the proudly Canadian label. The disaster was considered one of the worst garment industry accidents to date.

Former Tiffany & Co. executive Ingrid Lederhaas-Okun was sentenced to one year and a day in prison after stealing $1.3 million worth of jewelry from the label’s famous Fifth Avenue location. It’s a crime a judge called an inexplicable act of self-destruction by someone who didn’t need the money.

Fashion’s Lack of Runway Diversity
Catwalk heavyweights Iman and Naomi Campbell join forces with modeling agent Bethann Hardison for the Balance Diversity campaign to promote and bring awareness to diversity on the runway and calling out designers whose collections were mostly compromised of white models. Shockingly enough, there are fewer black models on the runway today than when Iman stopped modeling in 1989. In other diversity news, Dior cast black models for its Haute Couture collection for the first time since Raf Simons became its Creative Director, meaning over the course of seven different collections as well as campaigns and lookbooks, not one black model was cast.

Kanye West’s $120 White T-Shirt
This summer, Kanye West teamed up with high-end brand A.P.C to launch a capsule collection including a $120 head-shaking plain white “hip-hop” T-shirt that sold out instantaneously online and swamped A.P.C servers. Don’t tell God himself, but Fruit of the Loom was selling knock-offs in packs of four for $10, as one Redditor so eloquently put it.
