Velvet Dresses
Velvet can easily look dated and dowdy, but for Fall 2014, designers gave the slinky fabric a makeover by using it to drape bodycon dresses or by mixing it with contrasting textures.
A-Line Silhouettes
Structured A-line silhouettes are great for day-to-night versatility. They’re also breathable, which makes them perfect for fickle fall weather.
Textured Tops/Dresses
This season, designers stepped up their game when it came to knitwear by showing wildly-textured tops and dresses. When you’re looking to go low-key with your accessories, this is the perfect trend to opt for.
Long Knits
Long knits made for one of the season’s most unexpected, bold trends. It may not be an easy look to pull off, but it’s certainly the season’s coziest. This look works best with simple makeup and hair pulled back, so as not to compete with the surprising silhouette.
Modern Plaid
Nothing says back-to-school like plaid, and Fall 2014 offered a slew of modern updates on this forever-classic pattern. Better yet, this trend works as a top, a bottom, a coat…you can even go the accessory route with plaid handbags or shoes.
Heavy Sparkle
It’s go big or go home as far as embellishment this season. To make this trend accessible, stick to monochrome-heavy sparkles or a sparkled look with a simple pattern motif.
Elevated Sporty Outerwear
Sportswear has gone highbrow, a trend that shows no signs of slowing down. This season, focus on garments that meld fashion and function.
Winter Pastels
Just because the weather is cooling down, that doesn’t mean we have to limit ourselves to dark neutrals or rusty hues. If, however, you’re feeling wary about wearing a plush, pastel pink top in the middle of October, take a nod from Ralph Lauren and layer a pastel-hued top over a black bottom.
Capes
You can never go wrong with a classic trench, but the on-trend item for fall is, without a doubt, the cape. The great thing about this item is that you can go as wild and patterned or as classic and neutral as you like; just remember to balance it out with the rest of your outfit (i.e. if you’re wearing a statement cape, keep the rest of your outfit simple and streamlined).
Bold, Colorful Fur
Fur tends to be an investment piece, so if you’re going to jump on this trend, go faux and finish off your look with a bold accent (and a clear conscious).
