My Comfort Zone — Jihan Forbes

Don’t get me wrong—I love getting dressed up, and would every day if I had a glam squad to take care of my hair, makeup and the upkeep of my garments. Silk blouses (like this one from Equipment) don’t dry clean themselves, after all. But because I’m a busy bee, often having to run from my home office in Harlem to appointments downtown in the middle or at the end of the day, I tend to limit my work week outfits to things that I can either easily put on or pair with a wardrobe staple. So that means in the cooler months, I roll around in jeans, like these BLK DNMs and button-downs, like this Tory Burch one with a contrasting red collar–just my style. But when the weather starts heating up, I go for dresses I can easily throw on and look great in with zero styling. Case in point: this lovely vintage 50s scarf-print dress I’m currently seeking to justify purchasing. I mean, you can throw on a pair of nude sandals and run out of the house and still look amazing.

The same goes for my leisure wardrobe. I like to get out after being cooped up in the house working all day and grab dinner and drinks with friends. But that doesn’t mean I want to spend a lot of time getting ready. After all, they’re just the homies–no need to get dolled up for them! But…maybe I’d put on something a little festive like this ruffled Kage feather print crop top or a sweet vintage shirtdress.

As for the rest of the day when I’m working at home? I can’t lie–I spend those hours typing away at my desk, sometimes clad in a long shirt… and definitely no pants. I hate the way pants or tights feel on my legs, so sweatpants and leggings are out, and since I’m slow with laundry, all the caftans I wear at home (NEVER out in public) are often in my hamper…or at the bottom of my clean clothes trunks. For me, a pair of cotton hipsters is really all I need–and I’m OK with that. That’s why I love my Fruit of the Loom panties. I can slip ’em on right under my new floral J.Crew skirt and get on with my life. They don’t ride up or peek out over my jeans, for which I am always thankful. Also: they’re ridiculously soft–it’s like underwear reinvented. I would say they feel as if you’re wearing no underwear at all, but considering they’re way preferable to my denim jeans rubbing against my tush, that wouldn’t be accurate. Let’s just say, they’re the panties you need when you want that easy no-panty feel, without having to feel the texture of your actual skirt or pants grazing your butt.

I might be a lazy dresser, but that doesn’t mean I’m sloppy. How could I be, in these cute little Henrik Vibskov shorts and my trusty Topshop moto jacket? My Fruit of the Loom standbys make sure my outfits live up to the effortless attitude I’ve adopted with dressing.
