Dress to Impress

The dress is the thing next season. Or at least according to Matthew Gallagher, who showed fluid and elegant bejewelled shifts, mini dresses and one high-waisted ballgown skirt that would steal any show. It was a feminine free-for-all with silhouettes ranging from a tulle babydoll dress to a long, formfitting shift with a crotch-high slit. It’s a testament to his abilities as a designer that he was able to incorporate edgy 3-D pleating into one cinched mini dress, while still making it look womanly and elegant.
It would seem that Melissa Nepton was cc’d on the dress memo this season, though her aesthetic was considerably sportier and erred on the side of the tomboy. She showed flippy skirts and dresses that would look right at home on the tennis courts along with après match T-shirt dresses that played with pattern and transparency. Rounding out her sporty chic offerings were loose shorts paired with oversized tops and the chicest-looking laser-cut track pants you’ve ever seen.

Caitlin Power‘s all-dress collection will be the answer to every modern girl’s prayers next season. Minimal silhouettes, asymmetric hemlines and discreet accents like tiny keyhole openings at the waist (work on your abs, ladies!) and delicate neckline pleating looked both sophisticated and contemporary. The collection relied heavily on black and white with pops of bright blue and yellow, and used some striking colourblocking techniques.
