Crowdfunding isn’t as easy as it looks. Since Kickstarter launched in 2009, there have been about 200,000 campaigns featured on the site. Half of these projects have failed. And another 20,000 have canceled or suspended their operation. Stephen Burrows knows the reality all too well. Earlier this year, the famous fashion designer, who’s been on hiatus for four years, launched a Kickstarter campaign to finance a legacy collection highlighting the best of Burrows. His ultimate goal was $300,000; he only managed to raise $12,160.

When all was said and done, it raised three times that number, proving that despite the odds, crowdfunding still works. Currently, hundreds of new fashion campaigns are scrambling to follow in Mizzen+Main’s footsteps, but only a select few can make the cut.
