You may have noticed that we typically coordinate our outfits for our fashion shows. Usually, it’s because we wear a duplicate that’s in our collection or something that didn’t make the runway. But it doesn’t just happen during Fashion Week. We’ve often come into work wearing the same outfits — whether it’s Cushnie et Ochs or Zara.
So for our last entry as tFS guest editors for the month of September, we’d like to offer up our advice for how to match clothes with your best friend without looking like twins.
TIP #1: Try to aim for similar heights. When one friend is wearing flats and one is wearing heels, it usually doesn’t work as well. Remember, it all starts with the shoes!
TIP #2: We’ve worn black together in the past, but we try not to wear the same color when we know we’re going out. Otherwise, we end up looking too matchy.

TIP #3: Ages ago, Michelle and I were at an event. She was wearing a long dress and I was wearing a short dress. My mom came up to me and said, “You should have been in a long dress, too. It doesn’t look right when you’re standing next to each other.” So, according to my mother, wear similar lengths.
TIP #4: We know every woman has her individual style, but it makes for a better photo when both friends like the same genre of fashion. If one woman wants to go clean and minimal, both women should. That way you don’t have to worry about looking too much alike, but you’ll be under the same umbrella.
TIP #5: We haven’t gotten our poses down yet, but the biggest thing to remember is not to leave a gap in between the two of you. It may feel more natural to stand apart, but if you look at a lot of fashion advertisements, models are practically on top of each other. We try to do the same thing, which is probably why people think we’re sisters…or lesbians.
