If you thought M.A.C. x Selena was the only angel-inspired collaboration dropping this month, you thought wrong. This week, British e-tailer ASOS released its latest capsule collection, an homage to the late Princess Diana, designed in partnership with Wah Nails founder Sharmadean Reid.
The line marks Reid’s first foray into design, although, as the nail entrepreneur told WWD, she actually comes “from a fashion background, not a classic nail background.”
“I used to assist Nicola Formichetti and worked as a stylist and consultant,” the Central Saint Martins alum revealed, continuing, “I love the ASOS team and they’ve been trying to get me to do a collection for years, but I only wanted to collaborate when I had a good idea. I was never going to make a collection just for the sake of it. I wanted to do something cool. Now was the perfect timing.”
The collection not only references Princess Di’s polished yet youthful (and very 80s) aesthetic, but that of Reid’s East London upbringing. Fitting, as the late Princess of Wales was something of an (unwitting) streetwear enthusiast. According to Reid, “She always loved bomber jackets, she actually dressed quite American preppy, she even wore Harvard jumpers.”
The 20-piece range includes suits, shirts, sweaters, dresses, jeans, skirt, outerwear, scarf, shoes, jewelry and a scarf. Prices range from $13 for a pair of faux-pearl encrusted hoops to $129 for a black velvet minidress with pearl straps and a sweetheart neckline.
As you may have surmised, the collaboration, much like Rihanna’s Spring 2017 Fenty Puma collection, is filled with the Princess’ signature pearls. Perhaps that’s why it’s so easy to picture the R&B artist (and Di devotee) in pieces like the oversized pinstriped jacket or fuschia square neck minidress.
But don’t take our word for it. Click through the slideshow above to peruse/shop phase one of the collection now.
