Did you ever think Simon Doonan would release a book timed to the World Cup? Neither did we (and trust, it’s a lot more interesting than it sounds). The prolific writer and fashion icon’s latest book Soccer Style: The Magic and Madness is, in fact, a look at soccer through the lens of style. Turns out Doonan, who is also the creative ambassador for Barneys New York, is a soccer obsessive — seriously! But don’t think for a second that this means you’ll catch him roaming the streets of New York City in a jersey. So what exactly does Doonan wear throughout his day? Check out the slideshow above to find out.

Style Diary: How Simon Doonan Styles His Day
Day-to-Day Standard
"I am not a big fan of 'basics' or 'essentials.' Life is too short. When I am working at my desk, I often rock a vintage cowboy shirt or a Saint Laurent fringed jacket. I prefer to wear gaudy embellished souvenir jackets — I have about six — rather than sweaters."

When Having a Lazy Day
"I am very compulsive, so lazy days are not my thing. I like to get gussied up and hit the streets."

Important Work Meeting
"I have a couple of squishy velvet Thom Browne jackets — one tobacco, one navy — and when I need a little gravitas, I rock these jackets with a flowery custom Hamilton shirt and a narrow tie. I wear my Oliver Goldsmith Matador glasses for extra impact. Oliver Goldsmith was the eyewear legend who created Audrey Hepburn’s shades for Breakfast at Tiffany’s . See, I told you I was a 60s person."

At the Gym
"All my workout stuff is blue, so it’s totally versatile and also expresses my commitment to Chelsea Football Club and also Everton and every other team on Earth with blue kit. I am a soccer obsessive and follow all the teams. #Agnostic."

Fun Weekend Away
"My weekend looks are as extreme and demented as possible. I love caftans and massive groovy shades and big straw hats. My style gods are Truman Capote and Keith Richards and Jimi Hendrix. I was born in 1952, so I am a 60s person. Think Austin Powers, but with better teeth (hopefully)."

NYC Fashion Event
"I love a ruffled evening shirt. I have a whole bunch and wear them untucked with a Liberace necklace, which I bought at the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas in the early 80s. Lib is another style icon for me."
